GENERAL INFO FOR BEER BREWING WORKSHOPS
All beers made during a Beer Brewing Workshop are made from extract or all-grain recipe kits. Both styles will make about 48-52 (12-ounce) bottles of beer. We request you do a maximum of three extract kits or one all-grain kit per group due to time and equipment requirements. Multiple people can share one kit and split the finished product. We recommend purchasing beer kits from Label Peelers, Northern Brewer, or Midwest Supplies. These suppliers have good prices and a great selection of beer types and styles. I can provide all of these items and invoice you.
For general understanding, an extract beer kit typically takes about 2 hours per kit to make and costs a little more up front (about $35-55 per kit) as compared to an all-grain recipe kit. The process of extracting sugar from grain is already completed with an extract kit and supplied as a dry or liquid malt that is added directly to the brew pot. Extract kits reduce the overall time to make beer versus an all-grain kit by about 1.5 hours on brew day. Whereas, an all-grain recipe kit (cost $25-50 per kit) requires the added process of mashing the grain to extract the sugars, which adds about 1.5 hours of time to the brewing process. We currently only do one all-grain recipe kit at a time as it requires about 3.5-4 hours to complete. All-grain kits require more attention and focus through the process. After the all-grain mashing process, both kit styles are very similar for the remainder of the brew day.
In addition to your beer kit, you will need 5 gallons of bottled "drinking" water (not distilled), 48 clean and unlabeled pry-off style (not twist-off cap) 12-ounce beer bottles, and bottle caps. I can provide all of these items and invoice you. For Step One and Step Four, I recommend bringing a snack. If you prefer, we can order pizza and wings from one of our local watering holes to enjoy during the workshop. You are welcome to bring your own drinks or select something from our kegerator.
